  15. <p>     DIED. DRAZEN PETROVIC, 28, basketball star; from injuries received
  16. in an auto accident; in Ingolstadt, Germany. The simple statistics
  17. of sport would seem to give Petrovic his own bit of immortality--this past season, the Croatian-born shooting guard was the
  18. top scorer for the New Jersey Nets and the National Basketball
  19. Association's 11th leading scorer. He became a national hero
  20. back home as the leader of the Croatian basketball team that
  21. won a silver medal at the Barcelona Olympics last year. Yet
  22. upon the occasion of his cruelly premature death last week,
  23. when a car in which he was riding slammed into a truck on a
  24. slick German highway, it was his charming stick-to-it-iveness
  25. that was most remembered. "I saw a lionhearted player," Nets
  26. executive vice president Willis Reed recalled last week. "Petro
  27. came from a small country, but he worked to play basketball
  28. at the level of Americans." Ten thousand admirers gathered at
  29. his funeral in Zagreb last week.
